The name behind Providence New American Kitchen, which opened earlier this year in October of 2012, is named for the Secret Service code name for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and the 34th president’s ties to this region. The restaurant is located in the former dining space of The Drum Room located in the Hotel President at 1329 Baltimore has undergone a complete renovation and features reclaimed woods, antique lighting and a series of vintage prints paying homage to America’s past.

Providence New American Kitchen graciously invited me in to try lunch or dinner and the timing was perfect. I have a friend that lives in Maine who happened to be in town and Providence made the perfect lunch date for us.

The dishes at Providence consist of classic Midwestern comfort food with an elevated twist and the scratch kitchen uses many locally sourced ingredients.

Lunch began with one of Providence’s hand crafted cocktails, “The Ida”. This Martini is perfect for fall and winter as it is reminiscent of a spiced apple cider and includes a house dried raw sugar encrusted apple slice.

The lunch entrées included the Apple Wood Smoked Meatloaf, Smoked Chicken Ravioli and Smokehouse Cobb Salad.

Apple Wood Smoked Meatloaf – Served with sour cream mashed potatoes, this dish is the epitome of classic comfort food.

Smoked Chicken Ravioli – Made using local Capo Lindo Farms Chicken, this tender ricotta ravioli is drenched in a glorious brown butter sauce.

Smokehouse Cobb Salad – A perfectly cook tenderloin tops this salad and is filled with Maytag bleu cheese and house cured lamb pancetta all tossed in a smoked tomato vinaigrette.

The desserts at Providence are unique and just as delicious as the entrees. Our favorite was the  S’mores dish that includes a made to order chocolate molten cake, house made marshmallow and graham cracker garnish. All of the dishes were winners and our server Jeff did not steer us wrong when we asked for recommendations. Be sure to ask for him when you go, he will take great care of you!
