WHO: Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage, nutrition specialists and local food producers
WHAT: As part of a series of grand-opening celebrations, the community is invited to sample products made locally and those made with local ingredients – and to meet the creative geniuses behind them:
§ Swheatez Bars and Spice Cakes sampling by founder Linda Fisher
§ Indigo Wild Soaps, Sprays and Lotions sampling by founder Allison Wood
§ Grace’s Best Cookies sampling by founder Jeff Watson
§ Jack’s Tamales sampling by founder Stephanie Sheldon
Also, guest speakers will discuss relevant topics, at a time when “stress and weight management” are popular New Year’s resolutions:
§ “The Physiology of Stress: How Stress is Affecting Your Health, Hormones and Waistline,” presented by Laura Rues, ND, at 1-2:30 p.m.
§ “Cravings and Weight Gain: And the Blood Sugar Rollercoaster, presented by Caroline Cheong, BSc, at 4-5:30 p.m.
Giveaways – locally make gift baskets, reusable bags, gift cards and other items – will add to the festivities. Nutrition experts and other surprise guests will be available to meet, greet and advise customers.

WHY: As the Kansas City metro area sustains its appetite for natural food choices and nutrition education, the Independence community welcomes Natural Grocers newest store. The Block Party and Local Product Tasting Fair is the first in a series of grand-opening celebrations, as a way to thank the community, educate shoppers and sample healthy food from Missouri producers. Independence shoppers are invited to hear speakers, enhance the depth of their nutrition knowledge, eat, and experience Natural Grocers’ small-store footprint and friendly environment.
